FAQ

Why can't I build scaffolding in CRACK?
Starter Scaffolding supplies movable platforms. Custom construction requires the later Toolbox, Hammer, and parts. Ground-level construction begins with Poles.
Can you get scaffolding parts back?
The in-game construction manual says parts used in a structure cannot be returned. Empty Toolboxes are refilled at the parts dispenser.

Get the right construction equipment

The Toolbox guide explains the later construction unlock. The starter movable platforms are useful before that stage, but they do not provide a Toolbox.

Custom construction uses:

  • Toolbox: select and place a component.
  • Hammer: secure its bolts.
  • Scaffolding parts: refill the Toolbox when empty.

These rules are shown in the in-game construction manual, reproduced by Whisper.

How to build a stable scaffold

  1. Place Poles on the laboratory floor, near the egg.
  2. Use a green placement outline.
  3. Hammer every bolt to finish the hologram.
  4. Attach supported Floors and Ladders to the existing scaffold.
  5. Tighten each new connection before climbing higher.
  6. Use Floors or Overhangs to approach the specimen; Poles cannot stand against it.

For the 10m Work Order, build an accessible tower with a route upward. Add diagonal braces after checking where your Floors and Ladders need to go; the walkthrough places this assignment after the Specialty Catalog unlock.

Placement outline and bolt color mean different things

Color Placement outline Bolt
Green Placement is permitted. Tight.
Yellow It can be placed, but will collapse once built. Partly tightened.
Red Placement is blocked. Loose; needs Hammer work.

A green bolt does not fix an unsupported placement. Reconsider the support arrangement before building a yellow outline.

Can you get used scaffolding parts back?

The in-game manual states that parts used in a structure cannot be returned. Refill an empty Toolbox at the Scaffolding Part Dispenser when you need more parts.

Egg reactions and loose bolts

The 0.9.93 patch record says bolts stopped loosening on their own and instead loosen through certain egg events. This supersedes the passive bolt decay described in an earlier playtest preview.

In normal play, check the structure after a damaging reaction. Chill Mode disables scaffold-breaking events, according to Rafoli’s 1.0.43 notes.

Support Spikes protect excavation against regrowth; they do not replace a supported scaffold. Keep elevated routes usable for manual carrying, since Workbots do not excavate the egg for you.
